MEL HOSAIN

Mel graduated from the University of Dacca in 1960 with a B.Sc. (Civil Engineering) and was awarded a Ph.D. (Structural Engineering) from Dalhousie University in 1969. He enjoyed a long career as an exceptionally dedicated Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. Mel is particularly noted for the special devotion and passion that he gave to teaching. He received many prestigious awards for teaching excellence including the inaugural CCPE (Now Engineers Canada) Medal for Distinction in Engineering Education. His main areas of teaching and research were in structural engineering with emphasis on steel structures and composite floor systems. His research contributed to the updating of the CSA code for structural steel.

Mel was instrumental in establishing the Saskatoon section of the CSCE and served the Society in various ways, including as its President in 1998. His contributions to the engineering profession and to the community have been recognized with many honours and accolades including, Fellow CSCE, Fellow EIC, Life Member – American Society of Civil Engineers, APEGS Outstanding Service Award, Member Golden Key International Order Society and Year of Volunteer Medal from the Save The Children Canada Society.
